Terminally ill, 29-year-old Brittany Maynard took her own life on Saturday by consuming fatal drugs which were made available under Oregon's Death With Dignity Law.

She revived the discussion of physician-assisted suicide.

Oregon was the first American state to legalize the practice of recommending a life-ending drug to a terminally ill patient with a sound mind by a doctor. The drug is prescribed to the patient who asks for it. The patient must swallow the medication without any assistance as the doctor is not supposed to administer the drug to the patient.

Over 750 individuals in Oregon have used the law to end their life as on December 31, 2013 with the average age of the deceased being 71. Only six individuals who ended their life were below 35 years of age.

A patient must give some proof to the medical practitioner that they are residing in Oregon such as a rental agreement, a driver's license or a voter registration card.

Apart from Oregon, four other states namely Washington, New Mexico, Vermont and Montana permit patients to seek assistance in ending their life.
