Sinead O'Connor: People with mental illness 'get treated like dirt'

Sinead O'Connor has criticised the way women with mental health problems are portrayed by the media.

She appreciated the compassion shown towards Robin Williams who committed suicide after suffering from depression.

She also wishes that in the future, similar treatment could be afforded to young women suffering from mental health problems.

The 47-year-old singer asked the news outlets to avoid labelling young women as "crazy". She also said that it was pretty important "not to buffoon delicate young ladies in the street".

O'Connor talked about troubled stars like Amanda Bynes and Britney Spears. She said that they were "lynched" by the "notoriously abusive" press simply because they suffered from mental health problems.

She has spoken about the troubles she faced owning to depression in the past and is of the view that women are quite often stigmatised for doing this.

On 13th August, during her show at Roundhouse in London, the singer dedicated two songs to Robin Williams - a new song titled Eight Good Reasons and an a cappella version of the song I Am Stretched Upon Your Grave..

"It's a very bad idea, the choice that Robin made and I want to dedicate this song to anyone today who may be contemplating that choice and ask anyone not to," she told the crowd present there.

Robin Williams who was suffering from depression took his own life at his California home. Susan Schneider, his wife informed that Robin had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease recently. Sinead O'Connor is presently promoting her album "I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss".
