A week-old sea otter pup found alone on a California beach has a second chance at life, thanks in part to Shedd Aquarium.
According to Shedd Aquarium, the 6-pound, 22.6-inch long female pup arrived at the downtown aquarium on 28th October after being cared for at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the first 4 weeks of her life.
Pup 681 is now receiving all the care she needs at the Abbott Oceanarium, a part facility of Shedd. Veterinarians and animal experts from Oceanarium are teaching the female pup to be an otter by teaching her to groom and feed herself.
The pup is also being taught to regulate her body temperature by learning when to get in and get out of the water.
Tim Binder, Shedd Vice President of Animal Collections, said though the process is lengthy, our long history and experience in rehabilitating sea otters permits us to use our expertise to work on saving this pup?s life by providing her with a home and the care she needs.
The staff has taught Pup 681 to feed from a bottle where she take her formula and she learned to eat shrimps, clams and other solid foods. The experts also taught her to climb on towels as a way of drying her skin after a dip.
