Daimler's self-driving truck gets tested on Germany's Autobahn

Daimler's self-driving truck gets tested on Germany's Autobahn - German automobiles manufacturer Daimler AG's dream of self-driving trucks just took another step closer to reality.

The automobile manufacturer conducted the first-ever test of its semi-autonomous Highway Pilot system in a production truck, driving an augmented Mercedes-Benz Actros down Germany's Autobahn 8 between Denkendorf and Stuttgart airport.

The self-driving Mercedes-Benz Actros was still operated by a team of people to make sure it functioned properly during the tests, but it wasl able to steer down the Autobahn with the help of adaptive cruise control, a suite of stereo cameras, and radar.

The tests seem to have been successful, proving that the company's self-driving technology could be used not only on concept vehicles, but also on production trucks and cars.

Daimler had to go through stringent rules and regulations to get permission to test its self-driving truck, and European laws have not been updated to support regular autonomous driving in public streets and highways.
