Android 5.0 Lollipop has been released for select devices. Google has presented new APIs in Android 5.0 Lollipop to permit total access to the directory and automatic media store. It has also led to improved security.
These upgraded APIs will give the developers complete access to files and SD card directories with just a single permission of the user. The apps will create directories for the purpose of storage on an external storage card in a more organized manner as compared to KitKat.
Android developer site states, "Android 5.0 extends the Storage Access Framework to let users select an entire directory subtree, giving apps read/write access to all contained documents without requiring user confirmation for each item. Android 5.0 also introduces new package-specific directories on shared storage where your app can place media files for inclusion in Media Store."
Jeff Sharkey from Google elaborates on the upgraded APIs in Android 5.0 Lollipop in a Google+ post stating that the new Android 5.0 Lollipop features ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE intent as against KitKat. Apps can present this intent to select and return a directory from whichever supported Document Provider, which would entail any of the shared storage supported by the gadget.
Apps can at that time make, update as well as delete directories and files anywhere under the selected tree with no extra user contact. Just like the other document intents, Apps can continue this access throughout reboots, similar to other document intents.
