After Rahul, Kejriwal to visit Hyderabad University amid protests

After Rahul, Kejriwal to visit Hyderabad University amid protests - As protests continue in Hyderabad University after the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula, politicians of all hues are visiting the campus to express their solidarity with the agitating students.

A day after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati's visit to the campus, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to visit the University of Hyderabad on Thursday to meet the students.

On Tuesday, Aam Aadmi Party's Delhi unit and its student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, party leader Ashutosh and MLAs Rakhi Birla and Sandeep Kumar, assembled at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and HRD Minister Smriti Irani.

Last year, Rohith, a second-year research scholar of Science, Technology and Society Studies Department, and others were suspended from the hostel after allegations that they attacked Sushil Kumar after the screening of a controversial documentary 'Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai.'

This month, 5 students were expelled from the hostel after they accused the university authorities of denying them access to campus facilities, except their workshops and classrooms. Rohith from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district was found hanging at the hostel room of one of his friends around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

Various political parties have blamed Labour Minister Dattatreya's letter of August 17 last year to Irani seeking action against the anti-national activities of a student's union and the alleged assault of an Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader and a series of five communications from the HRD Ministry between Sept 3 and Nov 19 demanding follow up action for the suicide.
