In what appears to be fresh trouble for televangelist Zakir Naik, Mumbai Police has registered a case for forceful conversion and radicalisation against his aides Arshi Qureshi and Rizwan Khan. The two are at present in the custody of Kerala Police and face similar charges there.
Kerala Police had arrested the duo last month for alleged radicalisation of 21 youths from the state who recently fled to allegedly join the Islamic State (IS).
"We have registered a case under Section 13 and 38 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act read with Section 120 (B) of IPC against four people, including Qureshi and Khan," Joint Commissioner of Police ( Crime) Sanjay Saxena informed. The names of other two people booked are not known so far.
The case was reportedly lodged after the father of one of the 21 youths filed a complaint with Mumbai Police. In his complaint, Mumbai resident Abdul Kader alleged that Khan and Qureshi radicalised his son Ashfaque to join the IS.
Qureshi worked as a guest manager with Naik's Islamic Research Foundation and Khan worked as a volunteer with Al-Birr Foundation, which helps convert people to Islam.
