Utah car crash survivor baby getting better

The baby who miraculously survived car crash in Utah river is now getting better with each passing day.

The 18-year-old was attached to seat belt when officer Jared Warner took him out and handed over to the paramedics. Doctors said on Sunday that the baby girl is now doing better.

"There's probably nothing more gratifying than to know that," a policeman told CNN affiliate KUTV.

Lily's mother, Lynn Jennifer Groesbeck, failed to survive the crash in which the car landed on its roof in the Spanish Fork River. Groesbeck was 25 years old.

Lily may have met the same fate too if a man who had gone fishing on that particular spot saw the car. The man waded into the river around noon, then noticed the car wheels up in the water. "Where the car was, you couldn't see it from the roadway," Police Lt. Cory Slaymaker said.

The fisherman called emergency dispatch and within no time police and fire rescuers arrived and started the rescue operation.

The water was so cold that seven rescuers were treated for hypothermia. The car was heaved onto its side and that's when Groesbeck was seen in the driver's seat. The rescuers knew immediately that she was dead. Then they noticed the baby. "She was definitely unconscious and not responsive," Warner said.
