At least 224 passengers of a Turkish Airlines plane had a miraculous escape today after the plane which was carrying them missed the runway on landing at Kathmandu airport and skidded onto nearby grassland.
Airport officials confirmed that no one on board got injured in the accident. Airport spokesman Purna Prasad Chudal said the pilot overshot the runway during an initial attempt to land. He then tried to make another try and the plane then skidded off the tarmac.
"As the plane approached, it somehow missed the runway and ended up in the grassland area," said the airport's general manager Birendra Prasad Shrestha.
Chudal added that an investigation has been launched into the crash. "The plane had permission to land and while conditions were foggy earlier, visibility was ok," Chudal said, adding: "We are not sure how this happened."
"All of our passengers and crew have been safely evacuated and taken to the terminal," Turkish Airlines spokesman Ali Genc said in a statement. "Necessary precautions have been taken for towing the aircraft out of its current place and the relevant work on that issue have started."
The flight took off from Istanbul and had both Nepalese and foreigners on board. The Turkish Flight 726 missed the runway central alignment and landed in between the runway and taxiway. The incident happened at around 7:40 am (local time) and it caused minor damage to the front wheel and the nose of the aircraft.
