Police in Lebanon have arrested a Saudi prince on allegation that he was attempting to smuggle two tons of Captagon pills and some cocaine on his private jet. Four others were reportedly detained in Beirut in what authorities described as a drug bust conducted at the city's Rafik Hariri International Airport.
The drugs had been packed into cases that were waiting to be loaded onto a private plane that was headed to Saudi Arabia, security officials said.
The officials further added that 5 Saudi citizens were still in the airport and would be interrogated by Lebanon's customs authority.
Captagon is the brand name for the amphetamine phenethylline, a synthetic stimulant. The banned drug is consumed mostly in the Middle East and has reportedly been used by fighters in Syria.
The private jet was to head to Riyadh and was carrying 40 suitcases full of Captagon, according to Lebanon's state news agency report.
In April 2014, security forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle 15 million capsules of Captagon hidden in shipping containers full of corn from Beirut's port.
