Sandra Bland jailhouse death case: Texas grand jury issues no indictments - A grand jury will not charge anyone in connection with the death of Sandra Bland, who was found hanging in a Texas jail cell in July.
One of special prosecutors for the case, Darrell Jordan, told The Washington Post that the grand jury has decided not to charge anyone in connection with her death.
Bland, who is black, was taken into custody during a traffic stop on July 10 that turned hostile. Police video released after her death showed Bland declining to get out of her car until state trooper Brian Encinia pointed a stun gun at her. Officials said that Bland kicked Encinia, and she was detained for assaulting a public servant. Three days later, she was found dead hanging from a cell partition with plastic garbage back around her neck.
Bland's death was called a suicide by the county coroner, but family members and protesters around the country did not agree and alleged that she should not have been arrested and had been the object of racism.
A few hours after the announcement, #SandraBland was trending on social media, where many of the activists condemned the grand jury's decision.
In an interview to the New York Times, Jordan emphasized that this decision does not indicate the end of the investigation into Bland's case.
