Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam has been turned over to French authorities, Belgian officials said Wednesday.
Abdeslam was in Belgian custody anticipating extradition over the coordinated terror attacks that left 130 dead across Paris on Nov. 13, 2015. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Authorities say Abdeslam whose brother blew himself up in the Paris attacks withdrew from being a suicide bomber in the terror spree and escaped to Belgium.
Abdeslam spent nearly four months on the run as Europe’s most-wanted man. He was captured in Brussels in March after a dramatic firefight and accused of “terrorist murder.”
Belgium’s federal prosecutor released a statement Wednesday saying that Abdeslam “has been surrendered to the French authorities this morning.”
It was not immediately known when or if Abdeslam had been moved across the border back to France and the prosecutors’ statement said no further details would be divulged.
The arrest of Abdeslam was regarded as a potentially massive intelligence opportunity to collect information about ISIS. It also arrived just four days before suicide bombers bombed the Brussels airport and subway, killing more than 30 people in three different explosions.
One of Abdeslam’s suspected partners – a man who goes by the alias Soufiane Kayal – has since been recognized as Brussels bomber Najim Laachraoui.
