RSS chief wants serious attempts made on construction of Ram Temple

A condolence meeting for VHP patron Ashok Singhal provided a forum for the Sangh Parivar to push for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat saying serious attempts should be made in order to accomplish the Hindutva leader's dream of building the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Right-wing Hindu organizations such as the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Sangh Parivar have raised the issue of Ram Temple construction time and again, but a statement on the issue by the RSS chief days after the Bihar assembly election results hold significance.

Bhagwat said that Singhal wanted two things to be accomplished - construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and the propagation of Vedas. His mission should be accomplished by working towards those goals.

The promise of Ram Temple construction was part of the BJP's manifesto ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, it found place on one of the last pages of the manifesto as development was the main agenda of the party.

Even as the BJP's main focus is development, but the statement by Bhagwat has been seen by many as a step in the direction of 'course correction' after the Bihar election defeat.

Many leaders in the BJP believe that the issue of construction of Ram Temple remains relevant given the fact that UP assembly polls are scheduled in 2017.
