Real estate scion Robert Durst agrees to extradition to face murder charge in LA

New York real estate heir Robert Durst has agreed to return to Los Angeles next year to face murder charge in the shooting death of his college friend Susan Berman in 2000.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said that Durst, 72, agreed to be extradited from Louisiana to Los Angeles by August 18, 2016.

Durst is currently being held in New Orleans on a federal gun charge and it is likely that he would go for a plea deal and be sentenced to federal prison before he his extradition.

Berman, a writer, filmmaker and the daughter of a Las Vegas mobster, was shot dead on December 23, 2000. Police discovered her body in her run down Benedict Canyon home on Christmas Eve. Sberman was shot once in the back of the head.

Authorities charged Durst with Berman's murder last spring, just a day before he allegedly admitted that he "killed them all, of course" on the HBO docuseries The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.

Durst was arrested in New Orleans with a latex mask, a fake ID and nearly $43,000. Police also recovered a loaded revolver and marijuana from his hotel room.

Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, said in October that the real estate scion was willing to face trial in California. "He is ready for the fight," DeGuerin told PEOPLE. "He has come to realize that this is finally his opportunity to clear his name - at trial, with fair rules, in a court that will require hard evidence."
