Pokemon players arrested for bringing real arsenal to tournament - Two Iowa men were arrested in Saugus, Massachusetts, on Friday after police were notified of social media posts indicating the duo were about to shoot up the Pok?mon World Championships in Boston.
Their secret weapons included an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge Remington shotgun, scores of bullets, and a hunting knife, all stored in the trunk of their car.
James Stumbo, 27, and Kevin Norton, 18, did not have the proper licenses, according to the police, and have been charged with unlawful possession of both a firearm and ammunition. But Boston Police painted the arrests as much more than a permit issue.
The arrests have divided America's Pokemon community, with some supporters proposing that the incident was a joke gone too far and others arguing that the arrests had prevented a possible bloodbath.
Earlier this year, a man was arrested at a poker tournament in Ontario. Harnam Matharu was arrested for allegedly attacking and robbing someone at a previous tournament. Matharu was the chip leader and close to winning $200,000 when the police intervened. Despite being detained, he still received $80,000.
It must be noted that Pokemon tournaments routinely draw hundreds of contestants and in one weekend, winners can earn enough money to live on for the rest of the year.
From Stumbo's social media posts, he boasted that he planned to spend his earnings from this year's national Pokemon tournament on guns and strippers.
Norton's Facebook profile picture seems to show the 18-year old firing a pistol. It was posted June 20 and the only comment on it is someone writing: "Thug."
When Stumbo and Norton arrived in Boston for Thursday's opening ceremony, they were blocked from entering the convention center, according to the police.
On Saturday, they were arrested at a hotel in Saugus, near Boston. They will be arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court.
