The Aam Aadmi Party government seems to be falling out of favour among the predominantly Muslim population of Delhi's Okhla constituency really fast and this was evident today at a sit-in protest against the narrowing of a high-traffic road in the Shaheen Bagh locality.
Area residents came in large numbers to protest against the plan of AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan to create a park by taking up 20 feet of the Allama Shibli road which is 50 feet wide. The road is already notorious for big traffic jams and MLA's plan of narrowing the road further is certain to cause major traffic issues.
The dharna, which was staged opposite Shaheen Bagh police station, saw heavy participation from people of all major political parties and to the dismay of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, many party volunteers too were present at the protest.
There were easily 700-800 people present at the protest site though AAP is trying to play down the protest by circulating pictures of the protest showing thin attendance, cleverly taken before the protest began.
Delhi's Muslim population appears to be very angry with Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government. Activist Ashu Khan said that Muslims voted for Kejriwal hoping that this party will be different and will actually do some concrete work for them but turns out that Kejriwal was playing the same game that others have been playing for long, which is use Muslims as a vote bank, use them and then forget about them.
Social activist Mohammad Pervez, who was present there, said that there is lot of anger and resentment among the people against the local AAP leadership which is not concerned about the problems of the people and busy only fulfilling its own agenda.
Another activist Pervez Alam said that the road issue is the latest in a long list of decisions taken by the MLA which have not gone down well with the people who voted him to power and if things continued like this people will definitely rise up against the government.
Social activist Sarvar Iqbal Khan added that AAP MLA is acting as if he is not answerable to anyone and his high-handed attitude will not be tolerated by the people of Okhla.
Clearly it is a wake up call for Arvind Kejriwal and party if they want to continue to be in power.
