New York fire, building collapse: 19 hurt, gas blast blamed

New York: A huge "gas-related" blast in two buildings of Manhattan neighborhood left at least 19 people injured on Thursday.

The explosion took place in one building at New York's Second Avenue and Seventh Street. While an investigation was in progress, initial evidence put forward that it was a gas-related explosion.

Officials of the Department of Environmental Protection were also present on the site to check for the environmental and health impact of the heavy fire conditions.

According to a report ground floor of the affected building had a sushi restaurant. There are small businesses, restaurants and apartments in the neighborhood. The five-storey building was constructed in 1900 and had 26 apartments.

About 250 firefighters were searching for anyone who may be stuck in those buildings and safeguarding the surrounding buildings.

Another building which was at risk of collapse has been cleared.

Authorities have also built a temporary accommodation facility and relocation center in a neighboring school.

Last year, a huge explosion caused by a gas leak devastated two buildings in Harlem neighborhood. Two people were killed and 18 others were injured in the explosion.
