An explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City has left at least 29 people injured. At least 24 of those injured in the explosion have been hospitalized, the fire department has said.
Meanwhile the investigation into what caused the explosion, who is behind it and what damage it has caused is continuing, New York officials say.
NYPD Commisioner James O’Neill informed they believe the explosion took place on the street. Officials further say they believe the explosion was intentional and urged people to come forward with information on what they saw, or any relevant photos from the scene.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has released a statement on the explosion.
“State officials are coordinating our response with federal and New York City authorities, and full state resources have been made available for this investigation,” Cuomo said in the statement. “We are closely monitoring the situation and urge New Yorkers to, as always, remain calm and vigilant.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio informs early indications are that the explosion “was an intentional act.” But de Blasio adds “there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection” and there is no “credible and specific threat” to New York City.
