Maran moves SC against HC order cancelling his bail

Maran moves SC against HC order cancelling his bail - Former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran today approached the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court's decision to cancel his bail and directing him to yield in a case related to alleged setting up of telephone exchange at his residence.

A three-judge bench including justices T S Thakur, V Gopala Gowda and R Banumathi allowed for urgent hearing of the petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

The Madras High Court had yesterday rejected Maran's interim anticipatory bail in the case and ordered him to surrender before the CBI within three days.

The High Court said that "prima facie" Maran had "misused" his office by attaining telephone connections "illegally" and allegations against him were supported by material.

CBI has filed an FIR against Maran and others alleging that more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were provided at his residence and extended to his brother Kalanithi Maran's SUN TV channel to allow its uplinking when Dayanidhi Maran was Telecom Minister from 2004-07.

Maran had approached the court apprehending the arrest and on June 30 Justice R Subbiah had granted him anticipatory bail for six weeks on the condition that he cooperates in the investigation.

Later, CBI moved the high court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail on the basis that he was not cooperating with the investigation.
