The Trimbakeshwar Temple authorities have revoked their April 3 decision in which they decided to prohibit entry of men too into the core worship area at the famous Lord Shiva shrine here.
A meeting of the Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust organized yesterday annulled its earlier resolution limiting entry of males into the 'garbhgriha' (sanctum sanctorum), Nivrutti Nagare, one of trustees and Chief Officer of Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council said.
Nagare, who directed the meeting of the trustees said that the Trust canceled its decision of April 3 because of pressure from locals.
However, the temple trustees agreed about seeking additional guidance from the Bombay High Court in the matter even after its recent verdict that it is the fundamental right of women to go into places of worship.
Continuing with the old practice, men disciples were today allowed to enter the core area between 6-7 AM. However, women can have 'darshan' from outside the core area.
According to Ghule, a member of the Trimbakeshwar Temple Trust, the ban on entry to women into the 'garbhagriha' goes back to Peshwa period and is not something imposed in recent times. On April 3, the temple authorities had enforced a ban on men's entry too into the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine to provide "equal treatment" to both the genders.
