Lakhvi out of jail: PM Modi conveys India's concerns to China

India has taken up the issue of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi with China after it blocked India's move in the UN demanding action against Pakistan over release of 26/11 mastermind.

At a meeting of the UN Sanctions Committee, India had demanded action against Pakistan for releasing Lakhvi in the 26/11 trial in desecration of a UN resolution but the Chinese representatives obstructed the move on grounds that New Delhi did not offer enough information.

According to sources, Modi has raised the issue with Chinese leadership, adding apart from China, all other members in the Sanctions Committee supported India's stand.

Spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry Vikas Swarup said, "Government had taken up the issue of violation of the 1267 sanctions regime in respect of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. Our concerns in this matter were conveyed to the Chair of the 1267 Committee. We also raised this bilaterally with the other members of the Committee. In the case of China, this matter has been taken up at the highest level."

The sanctions' committee consists of five permanent and 10 non-permanent UN member states. Swarup said the subject of China blocking India's move was raised with chair of the Sanctions Commitee which is commanded by New Zealand.

The release of the 26/11 mastermind had also concerned leadership in the US, UK, Russia, France and Germany with Washington asking for his re-arrest. Lakhvi along with six others - Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Jamil Ahmed and Younis Anjum - have been accused of planning and executing the Mumbai attack in November, 2008.

Lakhvi, 55, who is in close relation with LeT founder and Jamaat-Ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, was arrested in December 2008 and was charged along with the six others on November 25, 2009 in the 26/11 attack case. The trial has been in motion since 2009. On April 9, a Pakistani court had released Lakhvi.
