IPL: RR and CSK back in contention; BCCI floats tenders for new teams

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided not to terminate Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Instead it will include two new teams in their place in the upcoming seasons.

The BCCI decided that it would go with the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R M Lodha committee's recommendation of suspending the two teams for 2 years, making the next two IPLs an eight-team affair.

Asked if new franchises will be from Jaipur and Chennai, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said "City preference is not there as the highest bidder will get to choose."

The Working Committee's decision was in lines with the suggestions of the IPL Working Group, which comprised of IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, former India captain Sourav Ganguly, secretary Anurag Thakur and treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhary.

Most of the BCCI members were not keen on termination of the two IPL franchises, which were involved in the spot-fixing scandal in 2013. But the BCCI top officials asserted that it would implement Lodha Committee's recommendations in toto and will stick to the Supreme Court decision.

President Shashank Manohar said that BCCI won't be vindictive towards any of its state units. Moreover, the meeting also took the decision to start the Treasurer's Office operations from the BCCI Headquarters here at the earliest.

The BCCI appointed Price Water House Cooper as the independent agency to look into the utilization of funds provided to the state associations. It also said it was looking to revive the National Cricket Academy.

The RR and CSK players' interest will be protected, Shukla said. He insisted that bids would be invited for just 2 years.
