I have nothing to hide: Sonia Gandhi reacts to chopper scam

Amid political blame game between the BJP and Congress over the 2013 Augusta VVIP chopper deal, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said that she is not afraid and has nothing to hide.

Sonia made the comments after BJP MP Subramanian Swamy named her in connection with the VVIP chopper scam, in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Swamy raised the issue through an adjournment notice under Rule 267, his first intervention since he took oath in the House yesterday, and referred to the allegations made by Christian Micheal, the middleman in the scandal, through a letter in the High Court of Italy.

The naming of Sonia led the Congress members to storm into the Well, with a few members moving closer to the treasury benches threateningly. Members of the treasury benches too got up on their seats to counter the opposition. Before things got out of hand, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien adjourned the House for ten minutes.

The UPA govt. had cancelled Agusta's Rs 3,600 crore contract for supplying 12 VVIP choppers to the Indian Air Force, after charges that there had been kickbacks made to Indian agents. In Jan 2013, India scrapped the deal and the CBI investigated the matter.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge expressed disappointment over a report published in leading English daily with respect to the VVIP helicopter deal.
