Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party government has landed itself into another controversy and ironically the party that came into power on fight against corruption card, is now facing corruption accusations.
The matter relates to alleged unjust use of Urdu Academy's funds. Kejriwal is said to have taken out Rs. One crore out of the Urdu Academy's fund to organize an Iftaar party for AAP workers. The iftaar party is scheduled for today, June 30, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor stadium.
As soon as the news spread, people in Okhla, Seelampur and many other areas started protesting against the AAP government.
NDTV journalist Munne Bharti, who is also a member of the Urdu Academy, expressed his displeasure saying, "Academy's budget is for the promotion of Urdu, not political iftaar parties. I, as a member of the academy, am against this. Academy's tenure is ending soon so to spend the budget first mushaira was organised and now iftaar party is a the cheap effort to use up the budget money. I have been constantly writing to CM, Deputy CM, LG seeking details of the use of Urdu Academy budget and a list of claims of Urdu promotion, but there is no reply so far."
Social activist from Okhla, Mohammad Pervez said, "AAP has taken Urdu Academy's one crore fund illegally for organizing a political iftar. I have some questions for which I am not getting any answers -
Why the Iftar party invitation card is not in Urdu?
How the iftar party will promote Urdu?
Why Iftar party invitation is only for AAP workers?"
Social activist Syed Tasser along with others will be reaching the venue of the iftaar party to peacefully protest.
After so much opposition and stinging questions, it's now doubtful that the iftaar party will even take place as planned.
The questions that have been raised are pertinent and will have to be answered by Kejriwal government sooner or later.
