Congress, AAP Protest As Pakistan Team Arrives At Pathankot Base

Activists of the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demonstrated outside the Pathankot airbase on Tuesday as a five-member team from Pakistan arrived in bulletproof SUVs to the base to probe a terror attack in which seven military personnel were killed in January.

Congress agitators greeted Pakistan JIT with black flags and banners of "Pakistan JIT (Joint Investigation Team) Go Back!" outside the airbase. They also burnt effigies.

Leading AAP protesters, Delhi minister Kapil Mishra claimed an "ISI-BJP coalition" and said, "We will not let Modi insult India. He cannot play with our security. Why is ISI being served biriyani by Modi?"

The Pakistan team will be taken to the area where six terrorists were engaged in a gun-battle with security personnel on January 2. Sensitive areas of the base have been obstructed to block the team from even a simple view of those facilities, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar asserted yesterday.

The Pakistani team might be taken to the border to "retrace the route of the terrorists". It may also be taken to visit the hospital where the bodies of the terrorists have been retained. India has permitted the Pak team to access the key witnesses - including a Punjab police officer who says he was abducted by the terrorists and his car was seized by them - but the team will not be allowed to question security personnel.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of surrendering to Pakistan" by allowing the team to investigate the attack. "If it is Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, how can Pakistan be probing itself?" Kejriwal asked.

Government sources say by permitting the Pakistani team to access the key witnesses and evidence, they are preventing attempts by Islamabad to evade responsibility for the attack. They also stressed that much of the access allowed will be mutual- they want access to the brain behind the Pathankot attack, chief of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed- Maulana Masood Azhar.

In a six-hour presentation on Monday, Indian investigators shared with Pakistan team the call details of the terrorists and their trainers like Qasim Jaan, Ashfaq Ahmed and Hafiz Abdul Shakur in Pakistan, samples of DNA and statements of witnesses.
