Chicken Of The Sea, Bumble Bee Tuna Products Recalled Over Possible Contamination

Washington: Bumble Bee Foods and Tri-Union Seafoods are voluntarily recalling canned chunk light tuna because of possible health risks due to contamination.

Bumble Bee is recalling 31,579 cases of the canned tuna with UPC codes 8660000020, 8660000021 and 8660000736. They were produced in February 2016 and distributed nationally.

Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling 2,745 cases of Chicken of the Sea 5 oz. canned chunk light tuna in oil and 5 oz. canned chunk light tuna in water that was sold nationwide between February and March.

Both the companies said the recalls are related to “deviations” in the commercial sterilization process, and could result in contamination by “spoilage organisms or pathogens.”

Tri-Union Seafoods said it initiated the recall because the tuna might have been undercooked because of equipment malfunction.

Bumble Bee said it issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution due to the possible under-processing of the affected products discovered by the co-packer during its routine quality audit.”

Customers can return the canned tuna to the store where they purchased it for a full refund, Tri-Union Seafoods said.

Bumble Bee said customers who bought the products should throw them immediately, but keep the label or other proof of purchase for a refund.
