Balochistan arrest: Pakistan calls him spy, MEA says he retired from Navy, no links with govt

Days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, a former Indian Navy officer was on Thursday arrested in Balochistan for allegedly spying and being involved in "subversive" activities.

However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said that the arrested person -- who has been identified as Kulbhushan Jadhav -- has no link with government since his premature retirement from Indian Navy.

According to the Pakistan Foreign Office, Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad, Gautam Bambawale, through a demarche to protest over the illegal entry into Pakistan by a RAW officer and his involvement in subversive activities in Karachi and Balochistan.

As per the Pakistan's Dunya News, Jadhav hails from Mumbai, his address was given as House no. 502-B, Silver Oak Powai, Hiranandani Gardens, and possesses a passport registered under the name of Hussain Mubarak Patel.

Jadhav's passport number is L9630722 and bears an Iranian visa with April 16, 1970, as the date of birth, according to the news channel. The channel also telecast what it claimed were images of the arrested man and scanned copies of his passport.

The channel further reported that Jadhav joined RAW in 2013 after serving Indian Naval intelligence and carried the ID number 41558. He was earlier based at Iran's Chabahar port, which India is helping develop.
