Auto Majors Move Court Seeking Lifting Of Ban On Diesel Vehicle Registration – Car makers Toyota, Mahindra and Mercedes have approached the Supreme Court asking that their cars be excused from the ban on diesel car registration it had forced.
The companies have put forward that their diesel vehicles are used in villages and for public service, and stopping their registration will greatly cause inconvenience to people.
The hearing will take place tomorrow.
On December 16, in an effort to cut down on vehicular emissions in Delhi and NCR, the top court had prohibited the registration of diesel vehicles over 2000 cc.
Reacting to the ban, Mahindra had released a statement saying, “The Company respects the order of the Honourable Supreme Court and does hope that these actions help to clean Delhi air.”
Toyota Kirloskar Motor chairman Vikram Kirloskar had said the company will examine the order. Toyota’s bestselling Fortuner and Innova contribute hugely to sales in Delhi, which has earned the tag of the world’s most polluted city after the presence of high level of particulate matter in its air.
To handle the emission issue, the top court had released a number of orders, including a ban on entry of trucks, commercial vehicles registered before 2005, and said taxis in NCR switch to CNG by March this year.
The Delhi government is executing a pilot odd-even programme that is likely to reduce the number of private vehicles to half on city roads.
