Alta Bates fined for ignoring infectious disease protocols

Registered nurses from Alta Bates Summit Medical Center discussed what they think is the latest safety violation by Sutter Health in a series of similar events.

The California Nurses Association members informed that 23 patients who were suffering from the transmissible disease had been kept in isolation rooms without proper ventilation in order to prevent the spread of the disease through liquid and solid particles in air. The act violated regulatory standards which have been set by the State.

The nurses also informed that the violation had resulted in risk of exposure to serious infections including tuberculosis for patients, visitors as well as staff.

That part of account has been denied by Sutter health.

According to a report, Carolyn Kemp, Sutter Health spokeswoman said it is essential to note that the clinical data review demonstrated that no staff member or patients were put at any risk.

CNA nurses informed that the violation in the year 2012 was discovered when another major violation in 2009 was being investigated by the state officials. The 2009 violation had left a respiratory technician and an Oakland police officer unable to work owing to exposure to meningococcal disease.

The nurses also alleged that Sutter did not provide sufficient 'Powered Air Purifying Respirators' thus violating new regulations which were put in place for taking care of suspected Ebola patients.
