Only traces of water found on dry hot Jupiters

Recent study of the 'hot-Jupiter' exoplanets by scientists with the help of Hubble Space Telescope has revealed the presence of small amounts of water on these distant planets.

The three massive exoplanets are known as hot jupiters because of the extremely hot temperatures on their surface, ranging between 1,500 - 4000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nikku Madhusudhan, from the University of Cambridge in England, stated that for the first time, the researchers could identify presence of traces of water in the distant planets beyond our solar system, even though the amount detected is negligible.

According to the scientists, the hot temperatures would have vaporized the water on the planets' surface and when they passed between the Earth and their star, the presence of water vapor could be noticed in their atmosphere by examining the light passing through it.

The three alien worlds are at a distance of 60 to 90 light years from our solar system. The researchers chose these three distant planets for studying the presence of water in their atmosphere owing to the large amount of light from their star reaching our planet Earth.

The water vapor present in the atmospheres of the exoplanets absorbs specific wavelengths of light passing through them. Astronomers can assess the amount of water vapor in them by studying the light that reaches a telescope on Earth.
