Medical marijuana passes assembly test, senate is next

New York: After US lawmakers debating medical marijuana plan well into the night, the decision to legitimize medical marijuana in New York could come down on Friday.

Early morning on Friday, the New York State Assembly passed the medical marijuana plan, and New York State Senate is expected to vote later on Friday, once lawmakers have a chance to review the legislation.

If the law is passed, it will certainly be a big step for patients, who want to have medical treatment that can provide relief to them.

The law will allow specific forms of marijuana to be used for severely ill patients, however it will not allow the medicine to be sold in smoked or plant form, but it can be distributed through an oil base or vaporizer.

However, Governor Andrew Cuomo had some reservations about legitimizing medicinal marijuana as it might pose a risk to public health.

According to him, there is a mechanism, which will allow him to suspend the plan at the guidance of New York State Police or Department of Health or New York State Police, if unintentional consequences are found later.

He said there is a criminal angle to the legislation as it would be considered a crime for a doctor to prescribe or give medicinal marijuana to patients, asking for it, acknowledging that the patient does not require it.
