An Indian returning from Liberia has tested positive for Ebola and has been kept in quarantine ward at Delhi airport.
The 26-year-old man reached New Delhi on November 10, said the Health Ministry. The ministry added that the man was already treated for the deadly viral disease in Liberia and he did not carry symptoms of the disease but when his semen samples were tested he was found positive. The positive test forced the authorities to put him under isolation.
It is notable that this is the first confirmed case of Ebola in India. "The situation is under control and there is no need for any alarm. However, all precautions are being taken in this regard," the ministry said in a statement.
The statement added that during convalescence from Ebola, the affected person continue to shed virus in body fluids for variable periods but the presence of virus in semen samples could raise the possibility of transmitting the disease through sexual route up to 90 days from time of clinical cure.
The main will kept in the quarantine ward in the special health facility of Delhi Airport Health Organization till his body fluids test negative.
It is learned that the man was carrying a certificate of medical clearance from the Liberian government, mentioning that "he has successfully undergone care and treatment related to Ebola and after post treatment assessment has been declared free of any clinical signs and symptoms and confirmed negative by laboratory analysis", the official statement said quoting the Liberian document.
