Deepest, unexplored parts of oceans mapped to reveal mountains, earthquake formation

A new map of the seafloor of the world has been created by a team of scientists, allowing us to witness thousands of unseen seamounts on ocean floor.

The mapping provided a very interesting picture of the structures that make up the deepest, least-explored parts of the ocean and also provided the researches with new clues about the formation of the continents.

The mapping helped the researchers find out the link between seamounts and earthquakes. They also concluded that most seamounts, which were once active volcanoes, are usually found near tectonically active plate boundaries, mid-ocean ridges and subducting zones.

The researchers claimed that the new map is twice as accurate as the previous version which was designed around two decades ago. The researchers involved in the study are affiliated with California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and other institutions.

Talking about the mapping, the researchers claimed that it will help in improving the estimates of seafloor depth in the 80 percent of the oceans that remain uncharted or (where the sea floor) is buried beneath thick sediment.

The map would also help in providing a foundation for the upcoming new version of Google's ocean maps. The study is published in the journal Science.
