Cardinals deactivate Dwyer after domestic abuse charges

Arizona Cardinals today deactivated backup running back Jonathan Dwyer after learning about the domestic abuse accusations against the player.

The team has deactivated Dwyer from all activities of the team citing "the serious nature of these allegations."

Dwyer was taken to jail in handcuffs on Wednesday and was charged with three counts, including "aggravated assault causing a fracture" involving the unidentified 27-year-old victim. He was released early Thursday after posting bond, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

Police also searched a search warrant of Dwyer's residence in pursuit of more evidence. Police said the 25-year-old player denied committing any assault.

Authorities said that Dwyer has a stormy relation with the woman that escalated into violence on July 21, four days before the Cardinal players were asked to report for the training camp.

The police was called to Dwyer's residence after neighbors heard a fight. The police however failed to arrest Dwyer because he hid in the bathroom, and the woman said she was the only one at the home, Sgt. Trent Crump said. "She said she was in an argument on the phone only," Crump added.

The next day, Dwyer snatched the cellphone of the woman and threw it from the second floor of their residence to prevent her from calling police about another dispute.

The NFL has been battling domestic violence issues since a videotape surfaced that showed former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice badly thrashing his then-fiancee in an Atlantic City, New Jersey, elevator.

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson was indicted on felony child-abuse charges for using a tree branch, or "switch," to discipline his 4-year-old son.
