Yoga and 'surya namaskar' opposers should drown in ocean: BJP's Yogi Adityanath

BJP parliamentarian Yogi Adityanath got embroiled in another potential controversy on Tuesday by saying that those against yoga and 'surya namaskar' should either leave India or drown themselves in the ocean.

According to reports, he said surya namaskar is part of yoga and "those who abstain from the Sun God should drown themselves in the ocean or live in a darkened room for the rest of their life".

Talking about resistance by Muslims to surya namaskar, Adityanath said more 40 Muslim nations all over the world are backing the International Yoga Day on June 21.

Media reports quoted him saying, "When they have no problems with the day, why are Indian Muslims opposing it?"

It has been reported that following opposition by Muslim organisations the government has decided to exclude surya namaskar from asanas to be executed on International Yoga Day.

On Sunday, the All India Muslim Personal Board said it will promote a nationwide campaign against making "Hindu religious practices" like surya namaskar mandatory in educational institutions. It has also called for an order to cancel the mandatory practice of 'surya namaskar' in schools.
