Techie rape & murder case: Convict sentenced to death - A special women's court has awarded capital punishment to Chandrabhan Sanap for the rape and murder of software engineer Esther Anuhya (23).
In the five-page judgment, Special Judge Vrushali Joshi drew parallels with the gang rape and death of a physiotherapist in Delhi in 2013, saying that social abhorrence and national shock created by this incident was parallel just to the one evoked by the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi.
The court pointed that the manner in which the offense was executed, the enormity of the crime, and the 'shock' it left on the collective conscience of society demand that the accused be awarded with death penalty.
The court observed that forceful sexual intercourse is one of the reasons that led to victim's death, adding that the accused did not stop even after banging her head on the floor and strangulating her. The accused poured petrol on her body and abandoned the half-burnt body in an open place, which proves that the crime is committed in the most inhuman and cruel manner.
However, Sanap was totally surprised and sobbed inconsolably after the court pronounced death penalty for him. Sanap's brother also expressed shock over the judgment. Sanap told awaiting media persons that the police have accused me wrongly as he had not committed any such crime. He said he would approach the appellant court to prove his innocence.
Esther's uncle Arun Kumar, who was present in the court while the court gave its verdict, said he is content and happy by the court's judgement.
