Sheena Bora case: Peter Mukerjea booked for muder

Former media baron Peter Mukerjea was booked by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its chargesheet for murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence in the high-profile Sheena Bora murder case.

The CBI filed its chargesheet on Tuesday, claiming that Peter was involved in the murder conspiracy, along with other accused Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna and Shyamvar Rai.

Both Indrani and Peter were not pleased with the fact that Sheena was into a relationship with Rahul Mukerjea. This was one of the main reasons for the killing. While Sheena was Indrani's daughter from an earlier relationship, Rahul was Peter's son from his first wife.

In the 500-odd pages of the chargesheet, the CBI has mentioned an email Rahul wrote to Peter on April 13, 2011, a year before the murder, saying he and Sheena feared for their lives. The CBI also handed over to the special court the statement of a "key witness" in a sealed envelope to conceal his identity citing safety.

The chargesheet has been filed two days before the stipulated 90 days since Peter's arrest last November. It included statements of witnesses Rahul and Deven Bharati, joint commissioner of police, recorded after Peter's arrest. Peter had approached Bharati after Sheena's murder, saying she was missing, but came back the next day to say she was fine in the US.

Prithul Sanghvi, a family friend of Mukerjeas, told the CBI that in a conversation, Mukerjeas had said that the Rahul-Sheena relationship was not correct. Another supplementary chargesheet could be filed later, including the negligence of the Raigad police after they first recovered Sheena's remains in May 2012 but did not follow up.

The chargesheet has highlighted a comparison of the money Indrani had allotted to her daughters, Sheena and Vidhie, on different occasions. Vidhie is Sheena's daughter from her second husband and co-accused Sanjeev Khanna. Vidhie was adopted later by Peter. It said Indrani had forged signatures and sold a Delhi property that was in Sheena's name.
