Oscars 2017 Live: Moonlight wins top honor after La La Land declared winner first by mistake, complete winners list

Final update: Oscars 2017 complete winners list is out now as Moonlight wins the Best Picture award after a big gaffe. La La Land was first announced as the winner by mistake. Speeches and everything were given and then the mistake was realised. Everyone was in shock but then applauded for Moonlight.

Update: Emma Stone and Casey Affleck have the Best Actress and Best Actor awards respectively at the Oscars 2017 show. This is the first Oscar win for both the actors. Emma won the award for her role in La La land while Affleck got the top honor for Manchester by the Sea.

Los Angeles: The Oscars 2017 show is live and Hollywood applauded as Viola Davis' historic bid for her first Academy Award came to a close Sunday night, capping off with the actress winning a the much coveted award.

For her performance alongside Denzel Washington's in the big-screen adaptation of August Wilson Fences translating for the big screen the same stage role that won her a 2010 Tony Award, Davis won in the Best Supporting Actress category, joining the likes of Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Mo'Nique, Octavia Spencer and Lupita Nyong'o as one of only seven black actresses to have won the same award since the Academy’s inaugural ceremony in 1929.

After thanking the Academy, Davis delivered an emotional speech.

"There's one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered. One place — and that’s the graveyard," she said. "People ask me all the time, 'What kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?' And I say, 'Exhume those bodies, exhume those stories — the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition. People who fell in love and lost.' I became an artist and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life."

Davis also thanked the producers, including her costar and director, along with the writer.

"Oh captain, my captain; Denzel Washington, thank you for putting two entities in the driving seat: August and God. They served you well."

Show's host Jimmy Kimmel started the Oscars broadcast by acknowledging that the country is politically divided and that he felt some pressure to be the guy to bring people together.

"Let's get something straight off the top: I can't do that," he said, to laughter. The host then pointed out controversial "Hacksaw Ridge" director nominee Mel Gibson and said: "There's only one 'Braveheart'’ in this audience, and he's not going to unite us either."

Referring to last year's #OscarsSoWhite controversy he said, "Maybe this is not a popular thing to say, but I want to thank President Trump. Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist?"

The 89th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, are airing live from Los Angeles on ABC.

We will keep you updated with latest Oscars 2017 winners list as the show progresses.
