Opposition condemns rustication of JNU student in RS

The Left parties on Tuesday gave a notice in the Rajya Sabha pressing for a discussion over the disciplinary action against Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid, the students charged with sedition along with Kanhaiya Kumar, who was suspended for a semester by the Jawaharlal Nehru University on charges of indiscipline.

CPI-M member Tapan Kumar Sen described the punitive action of the JNU the "most arrogant, anti-democratic act being patronized by the government." CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury sought a proper debate on the issue. CPI leader D. Raja also raised the issue.

Raja said "This house cannot be a mute spectator when such things are happening in JNU. This is very vindictive, revengeful action." Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad supported the Left leaders in condemning the punitive action taken by the varsity.

On Monday, the JNU fined students union president Kanhaiya Kumar and rusticated 3 other students for taking part in an event to commemorate parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Kanhaiya was fined Rs.10,000, Anirban Bhattacharya was rusticated till July 15 and barred from the university from July 25 for 5 years. He can submit his Phd in the July 15-25 period.

Umar Khalid and Bhattacharya will lose a semester of their academic session while Mujeeb Gattoo, another student, has been suspended for two semesters.
