Srinagar: Flash floods triggered by a cloudburst struck the Baltal base camp of the Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir on Friday evening killing two children and injuring ten others.
A senior police officer at the camp said, "We have recovered bodies of two minors. Few people are still missing."
The officials said heavy rains lashed the camp area on Friday evening.
"After heavy rains, we asked the pilgrims putting up at the tents near the hills to vacate the place. The cloudburst triggered the flash floods," the official further said.
Police have launched a search and rescue operation in the area to find the missing people. "It will take us several hours to complete the search operation," the police official said
The Amarnath yatra has two treks, the traditional Pahalgam route and the shortest Baltal trek. Most often, the pilgrims pick the Baltal, which is 14 km from the base camp. The other trek of Pahalgam, which goes through 14500 feet high Mahagunus Pass to the cave, is about 30 km from the base camp.
