Young Rishabh Pant hit a scintillating half century as Delhi Daredevils defeated Gujarat Lions by eight wickets in their IPL clash at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Tuesday to jump to second place.
Pant, 18, playing in only his third IPL match, was the star of the match as he struck a 40-ball 69 with the help of nine fours and two sixes. Pant's innings allowed he Daredevils to surpass the target of 150 with 16 balls to spare.
Pant and Quinton de Kock (46) added 115 runs for the opening wicket. Tuesday's win was Delhi's fifth in seven matches. They now have 10 points, while table toppers Lions have 12 points from nine matches.
de Kock and Pant added 50 runs in just five overs and the Dardevils were at 61 for no loss at the end of powerplay overs with the help eight boundaries. Pant hit his first IPL half-century with a six off Raina.
Earlier, Dinesh Karthik scored 53 runs to take out Gujarat Lions from a bad start to a respectable 149 for seven after being put into bat.
The Lions started the innings disastrously losing three wickets for just 24 runs in the fourth over before Karthik's 43-ball innings, laced with five fours, took them to 149 runs.
Captain Suresh Raina added 24 runs and stitched a 51-run partnership with Karthik. Ravindra Jadeja contributed unbeaten 36 runs.
For Daredevils, Shahbaz Nedeem took two wickets while Zaheer Khan, Chris Morris, Mohammed Shami and Amit Mishra claimed one each.
