The Delhi Daredevils (DD) may have lost their match against Gujarat Lions (GL) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, but all-rounder Chris Morris almost single-handedly pulled off a brilliant win for the team.
Morris, who was roped in by the DD for Rs 7 crore at the auction earlier this year, proved that he was worth every penny spent as he followed his two-wicket haul against GL with an amazing 32-ball 82.
Chasing a competitive total of 173 runs, DD was in a precarious position after Lions' pacer Dhawal Kulkarni ripped through their top-order dismissing Sanju Samson (1), Quinton de Kock (5) and Karun Nair (9) for paltry scores.
DD's Duminy also played a patient knock of 48 runs off 43 balls, hitting 3 boundaries and a six along the way. He was caught and bowled by Dwayne Bravo after playing a poor shot.
Duminy's dismissal was the turning point. Pawan Negi-the most expensive Indian player at the IPL auction-was not able to provide the support to Morris with the hosts needing 29 runs off 17 balls when he came in to bat.
With DD needing 4 runs off the last ball, Bravo came up with a perfect delivery into Morris' blockhole. Morris' hit carried the ball to Ravindra Jadeja at long-on and he could only complete two runs much to the disappointment of the home crowd.
GL rode on quick-fire half-centuries from Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith to post 172/6 in their 20 overs. McCullum scored 60 runs off 36 balls while Smith scored 53 off 30 as the duo put an opening partnership of 112 runs off 63 deliveries.
Leg-spinner Imran Tahir played an important role in the Delhi bowlers' fightback with superb figures of 3/24 in his 4 overs. Duminy (1/4) bagged a wicket in the only over he bowled.
