Kunal Ghosh, the suspended Trinamool MP jailed in Saradha chit fund case was rushed to a Kolkata hospital on Friday after he attempted suicide inside the high security prison cell where he is lodged.
Ghosh, a Rajya Sabha member, reportedly consumed over 50 sleeping pills and was taken to the SSKM Hospital in the city. Gastric suction was carried out on him. Ghosh is on oxygen support and his condition was said to be critical but stable now.
Pradip Mitra, the director of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research in Hopsital said "He was brought here at 3am in a drowsy condition. He is better now."
The guard who had been deployed outside Ghosh's cell at night noticed that he was unconscious. He informed the jail officers about this and the local police station was informed as well. Ghosh was then taken to the hospital.
It was reported that the doctors informed the MP had consumed tablets of alprazolam group. However it is not yet known how he managed to get the pills inside the Presidency central jail.
According to a source the hjail authorities will be grilled by Central Bureau of Investigation on how Ghosh managed to get the sedatives.
On Monday, Ghosh threatened to kill himself in front of a judge if the influential people involved in the scam were not arrested with 72 hours.
Kunal Ghosh, was the chief executive officer of the media arm run by the Saradha Group. Earlier he had said that the biggest beneficiary of the scam was Mamta Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal and he was just a scapegoat.
Other top Trinamool Congeress leaders were also accused by him.
Kunal Ghosh had been named in the CBI chargesheet in connection with the scam alongside Sundipta Sen (Saradha Group chief) and his close associate Debjani Mukherjee.He was suspended from Trinamool Congress in September last year.
