Kolkata: Police have arrested a top BJP Mahila Morcha leader in West Bengal in connection to a child trafficking racket in north Bengal. The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Juhi Chowdhury, general secretary of the BJP's women's wing in the state from the Indo-Nepal border late on Tuesday night.
Chowdhury was evading arrest after her name surfaced in the case and the police located her at the Batasia area close to the Indo-Nepal border in north Bengal after tracking her mobile phone tower location. Chowdhury is being taken to Jalpaiguri district where she will be produced before the district court today.
Chowdhury's arrest comes after a Jalpaiguri-based child adoption center came under the police scanner. The child trafficking racket was busted last week when the state CID arrested Chandana Chakraborty, chairperson of an NGO that runs the adoption center Bimala Sishu Griho. The center's Chief Adoption Officer Sonali Mondal and Chandana's brother Manas Bhowmick were also arrested for allegedly selling at least 17 children through illegal means.
Case took a political turn when orphanage owner Chandana Chakraborty accused Bengal BJP leader Juhi Chowdhury of facilitating the activities of her adoption center. On Tuesday, Chakraborty claimed that she had sought Juhi Chowdhury's help for smoothly running her adoption center and that Chowdhury had "spoken" to senior BJP leaders like Kailash Vijayvargiya and state Mahila Morcha president Roopa Ganguly about it.
However, Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has refuted all such allegations terming them a political conspiracy. Ghosh has said those in public life support many such social causes and it was not possible to independently undertake background checks of all such NGO's who seek support.
