Chidambaram: Grave doubts about Afzal's role in Parliament attack

New Delhi: Three years after the UPA government ordered the hanging of Afzal Guru, P Chidambaram, who held the finance and home portfolios in the UPA government, has said he felt that the case was perhaps not correctly decided and there were grave doubts about the extent of Afzal's involvement in the 2001 Parliament attack.

Chidambaram was replying to questions from ET on whether the courts had reached the correct conclusions in Afzal case and also whether execution was the appropriate penalty.

To a question that he was also in the government that executed Afzal, Chidambaram said he was "not the home minister then."

Although, the government of the time could not have held the court decision wrong, an independent person can hold an opinion that the case was not decided correctly, Chidambaram said.
