BBC India apologises for failing to acknowledge Sania's win in Wimbledon women's doubles final - BBC India made a real gaffe by mentioning that it was Martina Hingis who had won the Wimbledon completely overlooking Sania Mirza. Its tweet said, "Hingis wins Wimbledon doubles final".
However, the tweet annoyed Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani who openly objected to the same. In a response to BBC India, Smriti tweeted, "So does Sania Mirza."
Soon after Smriti's tweet, BBC India was obliged to deliver a clarification and remove its post. It tweeted again with the correction stating, "India's Sania Mirza wins women's Wimbledon doubles with Martina Hingis: (Correcting earlier tweet - apologies!).
BBC India's tweet created outcry on the social media with several posts accusing the news organization of 'racism'. Giving a clarification for the mistake, BBC tweeted, "It was an automated tweet, which we corrected and apologised for (sic)."
Hingis and Mirza defeated Russia's Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in a exhilarating women's doubles final at the Wimbledon.
