Asaram's wife, daughter arrested, later released on bail

The Ahmedabad police today arrested the daughter and wife of jailed self-styled godman Asaram Bapu but released them after few hours as they procured anticipatory bail in connection. The two women were arrested in connection with h a rape case filed against Asaram by a Surat-based woman, who had also named the godman's wife and daughter as accused.

"As a part of the procedure we arrested Asaram's wife Laxmi and daughter Bharti yesterday as their names appear in the FIR filed in the rape case," a police official said.

The victim, one of the two Surat-based sisters, had named Asaram's wife and daughter of Asaram, claiming that they knew that the spiritual guru was sexually harassing girls and they helped the godman in his plans to exploit girls.

The two sisters had lodged complaints against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, accusing them of rape, sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges.

The elder sister had accused Asaram of sexually harassing her between 1997 and 2006 when she was living at his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The younger sister had accused Sai of raping her repeatedly between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at the Surat ashram. Sai was arrested few days ago by Delhi Police after remaining on the run for 58 days. He is currently in the custody of Surat police.

On the other hand, the 72-year-old Asaram is spending his time behind bars in a Jodhpur jail after being arrested by Jodhpur Police in September for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at his ashram in Jodhpur.
