Asaram will be treated like ordinary prisoner: Jodhpur Police

Controversial godman Asaram Bapu, who is currently behind bars in Jodhpur Central Jail, was today taken to jail like any normal prisoner. It is to be noted that controversial spiritual guru was earlier taken to jail lone in a police vehicle with two other police vehicles escorting him.

ADCP (East) Kesar Singh said that Asaram, 72, will now be taken to court in the same manner in future because the police has decided to treat as an ordinary prisoner. He said that Asaram will now be taken to court in the jail?s bus and he will have to wait in the court's cell till he would be called in court.

"He will be produced in the court on call and will be re-lodged in the same barrack after the hearing until all the prisoners are taken back to the jail in the evening," Singh said.

Explaining the reason behind this decision, Singh said that the police force was forced to treat Asaram as any ordinary prisoner because a lot of policemen were used to take him to jail on every hearing and back, which used to disturb the routine policing exercise.

"It was important for us in the wake of the High Court's direction of hearing the case on day-to-day basis and now his treatment at the Rajasthan Ayurveda University," Singh said.

Till now, the Jodhpur Police used to take Asaram to court alone in its 'vajra vahan' with two police vehicles escorting him.Singh added that police were asked to remain on alert every time Asaram was taken to jail in the past but this will not happen in the future.

"After this, we will be able to focus on other issues like law and order and investigation and would be freeing ourselves of the compulsion and concern of taking Asaram to court," a senior official said.
