Eleven people with special needs, including seven children, who were staying at a government-run home in Rajasthan's Jamdoli have died, reportedly after consuming contaminated water or food.
Another 3 children are in critical condition at J.K. Lone Hospital in Jaipur, 18 km from the home where they fell sick.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognisance and issued notices to Rajasthan government officials, including the Director General (Health Services), and has asked for replies in two weeks.
The children were brought to the hospital after they complained of vomiting and diarrhea, JK Lone Hospital Superintendent Ashok Gupta said.
The Rajasthan government has appointed a three-member committee, headed by Principal Secretary (Social Justice and Empowerment) Sudarshan Sethi, to investigate the matter.
